Istanbul Metropolitan Municipality (IMM) is bringing free and unlimited internet to tram lines. The IMM WiFi service has been launched on the T1 (Bağcılar-Kabataş), T4 (Topkapı-Mescid-i Selam), and T5 (Cibali-Alibeyköy Bus Terminal) tram lines. Passengers traveling on these routes, which serve approximately 1.5 million people daily, will now have uninterrupted internet access. The IMM Wi-Fi service can be accessed through the “İstanbul Senin” mobile application.

A MAJOR STEP IN DIGITAL TRANSFORMATION

A major step in digital transformation continuing its digital transformation efforts, IMM aims to make internet access in public transportation faster and more accessible. With the activation of free and unlimited WiFi on these tram lines, passengers can stay connected throughout their journeys.

IMM Information Technologies Department Head Rukiye Aydın Türktaş emphasized the municipality’s goal of making technology accessible to all and positioning Istanbul as a leader in digital transformation: “This service on tram lines is a significant step in realizing our vision. Our goal is to expand the IMM WiFi network, which currently serves 6 million users across 13,000 access points, to all public areas in the city.”

Melih Geçek, General Manager of İSTTELKOM AŞ, highlighted the technical aspects of the project:

“The system installed on tram lines is designed to deliver high performance even under heavy usage. With 406 access points across 203 tram cars, we aim to ensure uninterrupted internet access for passengers. Our goal is to expand this service across the entire public transportation network, including metros and buses, strengthening Istanbul’s digital infrastructure.”

IMM WiFi SERVES 6 MILLION USERS

With a mission to make technology accessible for everyone, IMM provides free internet services to approximately 6 million users at 13,000 access points across the city. Istanbul residents can easily connect to the IMM Wi-Fi service via the “İstanbul Senin” mobile application.
